WASHINGTON, Feb. 10, 2004 The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) will sponsor a meeting entitled “Concentration and Market Power in the Dairy Industry,” to be held April 1, 2004 at the Marx Hotel and Conference Center in Syracuse, NY. Confirmed participants include New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, Food Marketing Policy Center Director Dr. Ronald Cotterill from the University of Connecticut, Milkweed Editor Peter Hardin and others.

”This meeting provides an opportunity to foster discussion which will lead to action at the state and regional levels,” said New York dairy farmer John Bunting. “The American dairy system is still subject to change and who makes those choices is the most important issue.”

This meeting’s goals focus on: (1) explaining the price correlation between farm-gate milk price and trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME); (2) discussing monopolistic characteristics within the dairy industry; (3) identifying state’s powers to take action on dairy concentration; (4) educating interested participants about current dairy industry trends; and (5) explaining that the ultimate fate of the American dairy system is still subject to choice.

For more information, including meeting registration procedures, please call Molly Spence at (202) 543-5675 or email nffc@nffc.net. John Bunting coordinated this meeting with the Coalition’s assistance. This is an open meeting to all who hold an interest in restoring competitive markets to the dairy industry.
