Flaming weeds (July 16, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- Flaming is one of the weed control methods that Western Illinois University researcher Gerald Vigue will look at as part of his research on chemical-free farming. He received a three-year, $129,746 grant from the Bureau of Land Water Resources to study organic production methods.
Flaming was a popular method of controlling weeds in the 1930s, prior to the onset of synthetic chemical herbicides.
The heat from the flame thrower touches the leaves, which boils the water in its cells, causing them to burst. The plants then wilt and die.
