Six European countries want to keep GMO moratorium (February 19, 2001 -- Cropchoice news) -- Although the European Parliament passed a new law on genetically engineered organisms last week, six countries attached conditions that they hope will maintain the European Union's two-year-old moratorium for at least a year.
France, Denmark, Italy, Greece, Austria and Luxembourg would continue to block new food bioengineering permits until rules exist that allow authorities to trace genetically modified products to their source. The process of drafting these rules -- already underway -- could take many months, even a year, before they're ready for the Parliament and EU countries to adopt.
These countries also want to see biotechnology companies held accountable if their products damage the environment or human health. It could take a year or longer to write and adopt this type of legislation.
