Japan to test for unapproved biotech foods

(April 19, 2002 – CropChoice news) -- The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will go the country’s ports to test 1,199 food samples in the fiscal year 2002. It wants to ensure that none of the samples contain unapproved transgenic traits, including StarLink corn, 55-1 papaya and New Leaf Y potato. The Ministry also will test finished food products to ensure compliance with the "non-GM" labeling requirement.
