A biotech canola full of omega-3

(July 23, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- Monsanto is genetically modifying canola to include an algae gene that produces omega-3. The idea is to develop a salad oil high in this important fatty acid without the aftertaste of fish oil, a common source of omega-3 for people who don't eat much fish.

Monsanto wants to market a product that it thinks will appeal more to consumers than its fare thus far -- commodity crops that resist the Roundup herbicide and kill bugs.
