Transgenic wheat could financially harm ND farmers

(Aug. 9, 2001 – CropChoice news) – North Dakota farmers, who produce most of the hard red spring wheat in the nation, could see their important export markets – the European Union, Japan and the Middle East – disappear if state and federal governments allow Monsanto to commercialize its transgenic Rounup Ready wheat. A number of countries have told the United States and other major wheat producers, namely Canada, Argentina and Australia, that they do not want and will reject the wheat that Monsanto scientists (and plenty of public university faculty) have engineered to resist the herbicide Roundup; the company has slated commercialization for sometime between 2003 and 2005.
