Efforts against genetically engineered wheat in Italy Links to other CropChoice news and commentary follow this article.
(Friday, April 2, 2004 -- CropChoice news) -- Like Japan, opposition to genetically engineered wheat has been growing in Italy. In a recent conference at Italy's Agriculture Ministry, "all the food chain players, representing representing companies and enterprise associations (farmers, millers, industrial and handcraft processors, retailers), sentenced to death Roundup ready wheat and, in more general terms, GE wheat," said Luca Colombo of the Consiglio dei Diritti Genetici.
"The conference was attended by the main and most important players of the
wheat chain and has been well covered by national media (TV and press); we
decided to invite as panellists only the private sector reps and to open a
dialogue between the Italian market and the Canadian wheat system (we
included in the conference folder a letter we received from the Canadian
Wheat Board reporting their concern on RR wheat; the conference was attended
by the Canadian Embassy): we presume that lobbying on Canada can result in a
consequent strong market pressure on US due to the comparative advantage
that might be generated."
