Dubious distinction for West Australia -- Skeleton scourge too wide

West Australia is, according to this story, building on its reputation as a
world leader in herbicide resistance.
The story says that the State now has the dubious distinction of having
produced Australia's first proved case of glyphosate resistant annual
ryegrass with multiple resistance to other common herbicides.
Tests by the WA Herbicide Resistance Initiative (WAHRI) last year confirmed
WA's first proved case of glyphosate resistance in annual ryegrass.
Further tests by fourth-year University of WA agriculture student, Jemma
Sadler, have now proved the population is multi-resistant to other common
annual ryegrass herbicides.
The annual ryegrass, from a farm at Pindar, survived a high rate of Group B
herbicides, and then some plants survived a subsequent application of
glyphosate, also known by the trade name Roundup.
Individual plants were also resistant to Group A herbicides.
Agriculture Minister Kim Chance was cited as saying this week that WA's
approach to the skeleton weed scourge will change from eradication, to a
combination of eradication and control,.
The skeleton weed eradication program will be replaced by a new skeleton
weed committee providing an opportunity for input from grain growers. | |
