Brussels squashes Austrian bid for GM-free zone

(Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- AFP via Agnet, 09/02/03: BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Tuesday was cited as rejecting a request by an Austrian province to ban the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs).

Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom was cited as saying that EU law only allowed such a move if there was new scientific evidence or a specific justification by the place involved, adding, "I have, of course, full respect for the concerns of the Austrian authorities for the protection of the environment and human health. However, I would like to point out that these are common concerns, shared by many regions across Europe, for which is it possible to find a viable response within the existing legal framework."
