Japan turns to China for corn (February 27, 2001 -- Cropchoice news) -- This week at least, Japan plans to buy March/May corn from China instead of the United States because of its concerns about genetically engineered StarLink corn. This comes in the wake of the Japanese Health Ministry's decision to test corn imports for the presence of StarLink, which has approval for neither human nor animal use in Japan. In April, the government likely will pass strict regulations of unapproved genetically modified products. Japan plans to buy some of its April/June corn from Europe.
