EU backs right to reject bioengineered food, crops

(Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 -- CropChoice news) -- Under the Cartagena Protocol, countries have the right to reject genetically modified organisms, according to a statement from the European Parliament, which has endorsed the world treaty on biodiversity and is working to bring European Union laws into line with it. Among other things, the Protocol requires that countries exporting bioengineered foods and crops seek permission to do so from importing countries.

The United States, not party to the Cartegena Protocol, views genetically engineered and conventional crops no differently.
