Western Canadian farmers growing more GM canola (Oct. 22, 2001 – CropChoice news) – Western Canadian farmers are growing more transgenic crops, according to the Canola Council of Canada. Of the 9.9 million-acre canola crop this year, more than 60 percent is transgenic, up from 55 percent in 2000 and 53 percent the year before. Farmers cited ease of weed control with the herbicide-tolerant canola as the main reason they grew it, according to the Council.
Shannon Storey, of the National Farmer's Union, told The Leader-Post: "The increase in acreage is the result, more than anything else, of a lot of salesmanship. It's not clear it has benefited anyone except those selling the seed."
A Council spokesperson did acknowledge that farmers are having difficulty controlling volunteer canola that, thanks to its Roundup resistance, has itself become a weed.
