CFIA says it will do thorough review of transgenic wheat application (Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it will thoroughly review Monsanto's application for commercialization of its genetically engineered wheat before granting approval.
CFIA spokespersons insist that the Roundup Ready wheat -- named for its resistance to glyphosate, the active herbicidal ingredient in Roundup -- will be carefully reviewed given the potential for volunteers and crossbreeding.
The Agency contends that it cannot consider market acceptance or rejection of the wheat because that would, according to the Western Producer, "weaken its scientific credibility and be seen by critics as the injection of politics. "
