GMO developments in Brazil, Philippines

(March 13, 2002 – CropChoice news) – In Brazil, the congressional committee on genetically modified foods approved a bill that would give the government’s biotechnology regulatory body, the CTNBio, the power to recommend the sale of transgenic food products in the country. If approved, this would end a four-year moratorium on such crops and foods. The full House and Senate would have to approve the bill were it to become law.

Meanwhile, the Philippines will soon require that importers of agricultural products will soon have to certify whether their products contain transgenic ingredients. This is part of the guidelines that the Agriculture Department is assembling to govern the use of genetically modified organisms.
