New rice variety could help to fight African hunger (April 18, 2001 --Cropchoice news) -- A new rice developed by crossing African and Asian rice species could help to alleviate hunger in Africa.
NERICA, or New Rice for Africa, features higher yields and protein than the rice that African farmers now grow. It's also more resistant to pests, disease, acidic soils and drought. NERICA outpeforms weeds and matures 30 to 50 days earlier than current varieties.
The West African Rice Development Association, the United Nations Development Program and others worked for three years to develop the rice through traditional breeding.
