Peasant farmers unconvinced by Bt corn, Pharmacia to spin off Monsanto

(Nov. 29, 2001 – CropChoice opinion) – All of Monsanto’s talk about the increased yields to be achieved by planting its Bt corn isn’t high on the priority list of peasant farmers in the Philippines. They’re struggling to sell the corn and other grains and vegetables they grow in the face of low farmgate prices and cheap imports.

Some of the farmers are also concerned that down the road, the corn borer will grow resistant to the Bt.

Meanwhile, Pharmacia, formerly known as Pharmacia & Uphohn, Inc., announced that next year it will spin off Monsanto, its agricultural subsidiary. The company merged with Monsanto in March 2000.
