Monsanto expects delay in introduction of Bt corn in China (June 12, 2001 – CropChoice news) – China’s new labeling and testing rules for transgenic foods could delay Monsanto’s plan to commercialize its Bt corn until 2002 or 2003.
In addition to the lab and then field tests on the transgenic variety, Monsanto must put the corn through a production trial prior to commercialization.
Monsanto hopes that the corn will be as popular with farmers as its Bt cotton has been. The company predicts that 20 percent of the country’s cotton acreage, nearing 4.6 million hectares, will be transgenic.
