New studies claim that GM wheat would hurt Canadian farmers financially (Feb. 28, 2002 – CropChoice news) – Four new studies from the University of Saskatchewan found that Canadian farmers could lose $185 million per year in sales were they to grow genetically modified wheat. Why? Consumers don’t want such wheat.
Were commercial cultivation of transgenic wheat to happen without identity preservation and segregation, foreign markets such as Japan and the European Union have said they would buy wheat from elsewhere. And given that consumers want less than 1 percent genetic contamination in wheat, the cost and feasibility of such a system would be doubtful.
