Britain won't follow Germany's crop trial decision

(January 30, 2001 -- Cropchoice news) -- Britain says it will not follow Germany's decision last week to postpone its plans for genetically engineered crop trials.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder made the move amidst consumer fears of Mad Cow disease (BSE) and increasing rejection of biotech foods. He also called for more organic farming.

The British Environment Department denied that it had plans to postpone its own trials of genetically modified crops, however.
