EPA again extends comment period on Bt corn, cotton

(Sept. 17, 2001 – CropChoice news) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for the second time in a month, extended the deadline for citizen comment on whether the federal agency should renew Bt corn and cotton registrations, which expire on Sept. 30. Biotechnology industry scientists transgenically engineered the seeds with the insecticidal bacteria Bacillus thurigiensis.

Although a recent National Academies of Science study cast doubt on previous research showing that Bt corn pollen harmed monarch caterpillars. However, some scientists involved in this recent research still question whether caterpillars that ingest a combination of Bt pollen and anther (corn plant tissue) could die.
