Brazil delays GMO vote until 2004

(Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003 -- CropChoice news) -- AgWeb:The media is reporting today that Brazil's government has delayed a congressional vote on a bill allowing genetically modified (GM) crops to be grown in the country until next year. Apparently, there is disagreement over the text and a other "more pressing" issues on year-end agenda.

The author of the bill said he would present his draft in February, after the highly controversial issue is tabled. One of the main points of contention is over the role of a proposed National Council on Biosafety, which would be made up of representatives from 12 government ministries.
