Ontario farmers growing more genetically modified corn, soy

(Monday, Dec. 9, 2002 -- CropChoice news) --

The London Free Press, 12/07/02, via Agnet: Ontario farmers are, according to figures released by Statistics Canada and cited in this story, embracing genetically modified crops in growing numbers and that the amount of corn grown from genetically modified seed in 2002 was 1.8 million tonnes, up from 1.5 million tonnes in 2001.

The increase means a third of Ontario's corn crop is now genetically modified.

In soybeans, Ontario's other major cash crop, the jump was even more dramatic, with 658,000 tonnes of genetically modified beans harvested, more than double the 299,000 tonnes grown in 2001.
