Japan finds GMOs in some food products

(Aug. 13, 2001 – CropChoice news) – The Japanese agriculture ministry has found that 11 of the 59 processed food products with corn and soybeans that it tested contain transgenic ingredients.

A cornmeal-based baking product bore a label stating that it was free of such ingredients, yet 6 percent of the cornmeal was transgenic, a violation of the Japan Agricultural Standards Law. If foreign genes comprise more than 5 percent of a food product, manufacturers must say so on the label.
