Thailand to require labeling of transgenic ingredients (April 20, 2001 -- Cropchoice news) -- Thailand has gone from banning transgenic crop trials to requiring that companies label transgenic food products.
The Thai government two weeks ago announced the end of Monsanto's BT cotton and corn trials. Such test plantings had been allowed under the October 1999 decision of the Thai Economic Policy Committee to ban the import of transgenic seeds for commercial cultivation.
As far as labeling is concerned, the Public Health minister announced yesterday that policies would be in place within three months.
Officials will consult the Codex Alimentarius (a joint effort of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization) and the Thai Agriculture and Co-operatives Ministry to determine what foods contain transgenic ingredients and should therefore be labeled.
