Canadian farmers oppose GM wheat

(Nov. 9, 2001 -- CropChoice news) -- Members of Canadas's largest grain company -- Agricore United -- don't want transgenic wheat until the market accepts it, according to Reuters. The Japanese and European market have repeatedly said that they do not want and will not buy genetically modified wheat.

Agricore United, the progeny of a merger between United Grain Growers and Agricore Co-operative, will process 40 percent of the western Canadian market share of grain and oil seeds.

The membership wants to see more progress on a means of effectively segregating transgenic wheat, a project on which the Canadian Commission is working, before it is commercialized.
