Mercury Rising, Emptying a Place for Bigness

(Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 -- CropChoice news and commentary digest) -- Before getting to this week's collection of stories and commentary, I must reflect on the thoughts of a CropChoice reader.

He noted the news reports of hunger in Argentina. This is especially hard to stomach, given that the country is a net exporter of food. Just about 90 percent of the soybeans the farmers there grow are genetically engineered to resist the Roundup herbicide. The purveyors and cheerleaders of agricultural biotechnology frequently brag that it will help to feed the world. It's not quite looking that way in Argentina.

I wish you all a happy holiday season and a wonderful new year. -- Robert Schubert, CropChoice editor.
